Only got $20.00 in my pocket...

Those of you who frequent here know that I am a faithful follower of Young House Love.  I love their ideas, their style, their undeniable patience (that I don't have).  You should also know that I love thrift stores, you know, if you are ever here.

SO!  When they announced a (Completely Unofficial) Macklemore Thrift Shop Challenge, I got rull excited. If you don't know the song, which I admittedly just heard of when I read this post (and heard the actual song for the first time in spin on Saturday morning), here you go.  Which, admittedly again, isn't really my kind of song.

BUT STILL!  A THRIFT STORE CHALLENGE?!  Count me in, sir.

So here are the rules, straight from the horse's Petersik's mouths:

Step #1. Go to a thrift shop with – just as the chorus of the song says – “$20 in your pocket” and take a picture.

Okay, here I am with my $20.00.  You'll just have to take my word for it that I was indeed in the parking lot of Hidden Treasures, Washington County Mission in my hometown of Monongahela.

PS - All of my photos are from my iPhone.  Unedited, and uninstagrammed.  And that is just the way it is.

Step #2. Spend that $20 any way you’d like and photograph your spoils.

Well here's the thing.  I was only able to spend $9.00 there.  So before we get to step #2, here is another photo of Step #1.

Sorry.  It was snowing and foggy.  This time I was at the St. Vincent DePaul store in Castle Shannon!

Okay, let's try this again.

Step #2. Spend that $20 any way you’d like and photograph your spoils.

From Hidden Treasures (who luckily for me was having a 50% off sale!):

1.  24 tall glasses for $8.00 $4.00.  They were all brand new in a box with barcodes on each of them.  So I had to soak them all before putting them through the dishwasher.

2.  A bunch of dishes that match my Grandma's china pattern (on my dad's side!).  I don't have those dishes, but couldn't pass these ones up for a mere $8.00 $4.00!  FOUR DOLLARS FOR ALL OF THEM!

Then, it was onto the next.

At St. Vincent DePaul, I got:

1.  All of these things:
A blue binder for $.79, a Liz Claiborne purse (which looked brand new) for $3.00, two picture frames at $.99 each, 6 glass Christmas tree ornaments for $.49.
The frames are for two of the 50 photos I had printed from my sister's wedding before realizing, what am I going to do with 50 photos of my sister and her husband?

Oh, and two new dishes to make necklaces from!  I think they were like $.79 each or something.
One day soon, those dishes will look more like this:

Or this:

Or this:

Since my purse was unexpectedly 50% off, I spent about $16.00 instead of $20.00.  Which is a complete bonus!  But the challenge wasn't quite over yet...

Step #3. Find one item (or more) referenced in the song and snap a pic.

.:I'm digging, I'm digging, I'm searching right through that luggage:.

And just as a bonus, even though it isn't even in the song, I thought you might like these.

Because big a$$ granny panties should definitely be a part of the song.

And as another bonus, I just want to remind you all of the time my sister and I were thrift shopping and happened to locate a certain wedding favor Zach and I gave out at our wedding.  How do you know it was ours, you ask?

It had our, um, names all over it.  And yes, I bought it for a dollar.  Even though I already bought it once.

  1. I always wonder...who would buy underpants at the thrift store? I mean, even if times were THAT tough, I think I'd go underwearless, right? And besides, you can get underwears at Wal-mart for like $1. GA-ROSS.

    1. Very GA-ROSS. I thought that too. For $1.99, I'd just not wear any at all!

  3. I can not believe how much you got with your $20. There is no way you would get all those glasses and dishes for that price up here. Our dinner plates are $2 a piece and side plates and bowls $1 each so they would add up to way more than you spent. I love the pattern of your Grandma's china, by the way.
